As recent doctoral graduates reflect on their journey, they share invaluable insights that could help those just beginning their doctoral programs.


Here's what they wish they had known from the start:


IRB and Research Preparation:

· Take advantage of IRB office hours to avoid simple mistakes that could delay your process

· Work proactively while waiting for approvals

· Start documenting research articles early in your coursework

· Use discussion questions as opportunities to gather research for your dissertation

· Study the rubrics and requirements for all chapters, including 4 and 5, before you begin


Time Management:

· Don't wait until pre-dissertation courses to start your research

· Work ahead whenever possible

· Create a work-life balance - it's okay to get a B sometimes

· Learn to say "no" to additional commitments

· Stay organized throughout the process


Support System:

· Build an informal network of friends and family

· Find someone you can rely on and vent to

· Remember it's okay to feel frustrated

· Surround yourself with loved ones during challenging times

· Take time for self-care, including exercise and reflection


Committee Relationships:

· Trust your chair's guidance - don't fight the process

· Maintain regular communication with your methodologist and content expert

· Don't be afraid to ask questions

· Choose a strong content expert who will support you

· Listen to your professors' feedback and don't take it personally


Mindset for Success:

· Remember why you love learning

· Treat it as an ultra-marathon, not a sprint

· Expect to work hard and make sacrifices

· Persevere through challenges

· Keep focused on the end goal - graduation is a wonderful experience
