Introducing the Impact dissertation || A New Model for Doctoral Research
Introducing the Impact Dissertation: A New Model for Doctoral Research Is a doctoral degree still worth it? In this video, I introduce the Impact Dissertation — a model I co-developed with Dr. Ken Sherman, building on Dr. Scott Greenberger's Guide for Reflective Practice, with contributions from Dr. Tara Chavez, Dr. Cyndi Bainbridge, and others. Traditional dissertations close gaps in the literature. The Impact Dissertation keeps the same methodological rigor — the same peer-reviewed designs, the same IRB-approved research standards — but orients doctoral research toward solving real problems in professional practice. Grounded in John Dewey's theory of reflective thinking, this model is built for scholar-practitioners who want their research to produce solutions their organizations can actually use. This video covers the following: ✅ Why traditional and Impact dissertations both matter — and who each one serves ✅ The Dewey-based framework behind the model: reflective readiness, working ideas, and warranted judgment ✅ How the literature review functions as a vetting process for practitioner hypotheses ✅ The Phase 1 and Phase 2 Decisions that structure the research ✅ Who this model is for, and the doctoral programs it currently supports (EdD, DBA, Doctor of Health Administration, PhD in General Psychology) ✅ What's next: the Guide for Impact Research and Impact Epistemology 📖 Foundational article: Greenberger, S. W., Chavez, T. E., Sherman, K., & Markette, N. J. (2025). Solving Problems of Practice: Rethinking the Doctoral Dissertation Using Deweyan Reflection. The Journal of Continuing Higher Education, 73(3), 286–299. https://doi.org/10.1080/07377363.2025.2475573 If you're considering a doctoral program and want your research to matter beyond the literature — for your organization, your field, and the people you serve — this model is worth exploring. Do NOT SURRENDER Your Thinking || The Role of AI in Doctoral Dissertation Research
Dr. Markette shares a recent article by Ajay Tejasvi who suggested that AI is tantamount to surrendering our ability to think. The Leadership Skill That’s Quietly Disappearing in the Age of AI — and How to Reclaim It - by Ajay Tejasvi https://www.entrepreneur.com/leadership/the-leadership-skill-thats-quietly-fading-in-the-age-of-ai/502944 So what does that mean for your doctorate? Is your degree still worth it? In this video, I break down why the value of doctoral education was never really about cognitive labor — and why that's actually good news. I explain what AI can't replace (judgment, discernment, critical thinking, problem-solving), how to use AI as a thinking partner rather than a shortcut, and why the people who engage early will be the ones who lead. Whether you're just starting your program or deep in your dissertation, this conversation will reshape how you think about your degree — and the world you're preparing to enter. PROMPT STRUCTURE FORMULA Context + Specificity + Academic Level + Desired Output + Constraints EXAMPLE PROMPTS FROM VIDEO 1. Research Gap Identification Prompt I'm a doctoral student in K-12 leadership studying student absenteeism patterns in urban elementary schools. I need to identify three specific research gaps in the literature published between 2020-2024 that focus on post-pandemic attendance recovery in high-poverty districts. 2. Assumption Challenge Prompt I'm developing a dissertation hypothesis that social media activism leads to increased political engagement among Generation Z. What are five potential assumptions I'm making that could weaken this hypothesis? For each assumption, suggest one methodological approach to test or control for it. 3. Literature Gap Identification Prompt Based on the following research question [insert your question], what are the top three methodological approaches that haven't been adequately explored in the existing literature? Suggest specific research designs that could address these gaps. 4. Broad Brainstorming Prompt I'm interested in the intersection of artificial intelligence and healthcare ethics. Generate ten potential research angles that haven't been extensively studied, focusing on emerging technologies introduced in the last two years. 5. Progressive Narrowing Prompt Expand on the concept of AI bias in diagnostic algorithms. What would be three specific, measurable research questions I could investigate within this topic? Include potential data sources and methodological considerations. 6. Expert Panel Approach Respond as if you're a panel consisting of a methodologist, a subject matter expert in [your field], and a dissertation committee member. Evaluate my research proposal from each perspective. 7. Constraint Creativity Prompt Help me design a research study on teacher burnout, but I can only survey participants twice, have a budget under $500, and must complete data collection in six weeks. 8. Assumption Reversal Prompt My research assumes that remote work decreases productivity. What would a study look like if I hypothesized the opposite? What variables would I need to measure differently? KEY TAKEAWAYS Be specific: include your academic level, field, focus area, desired output, and constraints Use progressive prompting: start broad, then narrow down Challenge your assumptions before committing to a research design Think of AI as a tool to make your thinking more rigorous, not to replace it Contact us for sponsorships: drmarkette@gmail.com APA citation: Markette, N. & Markette., J.
