How to Write CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY in ONLY 3 Weeks || Dissertation Proposal

by Drs. Nicholas and Jo Markette

Writing your dissertation's methodology chapter doesn't have to be overwhelming. By breaking it down into manageable sections and following a structured timeline, you can complete Chapter 3 in just three weeks. Think of it like planning a trip - you need to know where you're going, what you're going to do, and how long you'll stay.

A typical Chapter 3 consists of 13 sections, though this may vary by institution. The key to success is chunking these sections into three manageable weeks:

Week 1 focuses on foundational elements:

  • Introduction (2 days)

  • Purpose statement (2 days)

  • Research questions/phenomena (2 days)

  • Methodology rationale (1 day)

Week 2 dives into the research design:

  • Research setting

  • Participants

  • Sampling method

  • Data collection

  • With a built-in "slush day" for flexibility

Week 3 tackles the longer sections first, then wraps up with shorter ones:

  • Research procedures (typically longer)

  • Data analysis (more extensive)

  • Trustworthiness

  • Ethics

  • Summary

Most sections require only 1-2 pages, making them achievable in 1-2 days each. However, this timeline is customizable to your life circumstances. Need to shift your slush day to Wednesday for your child's soccer game? Want to take Sunday off before starting the next section? The key is making the plan work for your schedule and responsibilities.

Remember two crucial points: First, always verify your institution's specific requirements for Chapter 3. Second, adapt this timeline to fit your personal circumstances and state of life.
